Reloop Headphones

We are now carrying Reloop headphones at Calsound.com!

If you haven’t heard of Reloop before, Reloop has evolved from a German garage company, founded by a group of specialized engineers who had a high affinity for DJs, to a globally operating company that equips mixing musicians in more than 40 countries.

They sound great, and at the $89.99 price point, they pretty darn affordable.  Oh, and they look cool too!  We’re loving the “noble rubber paint finish”, it gives them a cool stealth matte look.

Check em out!

Prospecting for Vinyl Gold

Sometime ago Calsound took on a huge collection of vinyl records. There were roughly 50 crates of various genres of music including rock, soul, disco, random junk, and most important to us, dance music.

We also sell our record collection on Discogs and knew that there would be potentially some valuable records in the newly acquired collection that we could resell on our Discogs Store. We knew that the task of going through the collection would be daunting and very time consuming to value what the records were really worth.

After a quick skimming of the entire collection to assess what we really got ourselves into I came upon a 1992 underground warehouse classic that made our hearts race, to our disbelief we found a near mint copy of Coco Steel & Lovebomb’s release “Feel Itremixed by Mr. Kid Batchelor!  We struck gold!  It was like we came upon a vein of gold that continued to give us classic warehouse hit after hit!

Then the gold vein started to show signs that it was quickly depleting its vinyl riches and we began to see your typical “Captain and Tennille, Diana Ross, Elton John” blah blah stuff.

Many months later I had a psychic moment!  It was this past Saturday morning. Wait; let me digress a few years; no, in fact 18 years.  It was 1992 and I was in my 3rd year of producing and promoting underground warehouse parties in San Diego.  There was a track that was a huge dance floor hit that stuck with me all these years, and I always wished I owned a copy.  I scoured the record stores to see if I could find this vinyl gem but was never so lucky.

Back to my psychic moment this past Saturday while I was having a shower. I was thinking about that track, singing it in my head, and thinking about all the amazing moments I had in the golden era of the underground scene, and of course realizing that I had to have that record.  That night I decided that I should give another once over of the remaining collection that we deemed “no value” before we donate the rest of it to a thrift store. I thought, “you know, there could still be some records in there that I would like to keep and play”.  I reached down and as I did so I thought to myself, “this collection has been a lot of work to post on Discogs and wouldn’t it be amazing to find the record that is so close to my heart before we give the rest of it away.  I pulled one record, then another and then I see a white label- no markings; some DJs just look past that, and most of the time I do as well.  This record was staring at me, telling me to pick it up telling me that it is the “ONE”.  I pick it up, turn it over, and there it is: just like the scene out of Pulp Fiction.  You know the one where Jules opens the brief case and his face illuminates with the gold reflection.  I yelled out loud “Oh Shit, No Fucking Way”. It was Xenophobia –“Rush In the House”. Here it is, in my very hands, a quest that took me 18 years, it is finally mine!

Needless to say, I carefully placed it onto my turntable to make sure I was not hallucinating, and out of my mouth again “Oh Shit” it is, the one record that I always wanted!!!

I played that tracked probably 10 times that night and then played it numerous times the next day and then again the next day for my friends.   For me, this record is a memento of the “good ol’ days” one in which no mp3 could have ever have fulfilled. Vinyl records for me are my scrap book, memory triggers of my commitment to the underground scene through the 90’s and something I will cherish for the rest of my life.

To me, vinyl records are more than just music!

Have a dig and maybe you will discover a record that is priceless to you too!

Coco Steel & Lovebomb – Feel It

Xenophobia – Rush In the House

Flying Lotus Friday

Have you heard Flying Lotus? If you haven’t you’re in for a treat.  Flying Lotus’ music has a West Coast Vibe with funky soul-like the beats of Dilla or Madlib, mixed with the glitchy psychedelic downtempo of  Daedelus.

Flying Lotus 1983 vinyl

Flying Lotus – 1983
Their first full length album gets a welcome repress.  The title track is laid back dopeness… great for a road trip or a lazy afternoon.  We also love Babble- a glitchy ass shaker.

Flying Lotus Whole Wide World

Flying Lotus – Whole Wide World

Teaming up with West Coast MC Declaime for a sick underground hip hop tune, this 12″ features instrumentals of both tracks (“Lit Up” on the flip), plus the more glitched out bonus instrumental “Keep It Moving”.

Carlos Ninos Flying Lotus Hot Heavy Heat Dimlite

Carlos Nino & Flying Lotus – Hot Heavy Heat *Dimlite Remixes
Ridiculous drum programming, psyched-out fuzz bass guitar and more infinite space than any balloon could hold. The Dimlite remix of Hot Heavy Heat is anything but “dim”.  Oh so punny.  We should stick to our day job.

You can snatch these Flying Lotus records up at 30% off for a limited time with the coupon code lovevinyl.  Coupon expires August 8th 2010. We’re also offering FREE SHIPPING on orders of 3 or more records.

Cassette Tape Revival?

Cassette Tape DJ Mixtape

According to this LA Times Article, cassette tapes are making a comeback.

We loved some of the quotes in this article: “tape is like the weird uncle no one talks about”, and “Mp3s sound terrible anyways, so why not have something that sounds terrible that you can hold?”… the article goes on to say that tapes have a fetishist like following and there are even all-cassette-tape DJ nights.

Tapes will always hold a warm fuzzy place for us.  Remember old DJ mix tapes when they were actually TAPES? We busted some old ones out not too long ago.  Ah the memories.  Takes you back.

If you like old DJ mixtapes you’re gonna want to check out this site: Ezeskankin for a lot of great mixtapes from back in the day. They’ve got old Cut Chemist, Derrick Carter, Dubtribe, and more as well as local favorites.

So, here’s an idea:  this weekend take out a tape from your stash (you do have a cassette tape stash don’t you?) and pop it in the tape player.  It’ll bring a smile to your face.  You can thank me later.
